Krosmaster 2.0 First impressions

Greetings Masters of Krosmaster, this is Warpstone and today we have a little overview of what awaits us this autumn.

Recently a box came here to Moscow, the letters on the box said Krosmaster Arena 2.0
I think no one need clarification on the changes in the rules as everyone had an opportunity to both read about them here and study the 2.0 rulebook.
So we had a game skipping the tutorial section of the rulebook (which is made similar to the previous version where you learn to play step by step) and divided the teams as the rulebook advised: Julith, Grampy-protector, Lilotte and Khan Karkass versus Jahash, Bakara, Marline and Joris-swashbuckler.

*The new arena: absolutely new twosided board. The side we played on is densely packed with losblocking Market stands (trees) in the center.

*The new DR: when the DR were revealed we had only one question “what did we collect kamas for?”.
The new rewards seem much weaker than the previous versions. But while playing you get an insight – no more Kivins critting you for 4 damage without being damaged back! 9-kama reward give you +1AP and +1MP so no more dofuses for +3AP and extra attacks for that. The rewards balance the game and make it more predictable. Every player had a Stasis crystal topdecked against him – so no more of that.

*The new game: So team Julith advanced rapidly as Julith herself teleported and moved and Grampy was pushed by Karkass and buffed by Lilotte. Grampy was solely purposed to give Joris -2AP each round so that the little swashbuckler could not hit Julith hard.
As soon as Jahash moved out he was KOed and the game was decided.
So the teams seem a little unbalanced for the base game as team Julith has all the instrumentalities to rapidly move around and deal damage where needed while debuffing the opponents and block their paths with a summoned Fleeflee.

*The new Krosmasters
Julith – really high initiative and HP, really fast movement, teleporting without any risk of lock, tons of damage. Thanks ankama she’s unfazed and thus cannot be buffed but her plzce is in the boss list.
Jahash – tough guy with a really nice close combat potential but a boss.
Grampy – Protector – unexpectedly a really great and Versatile Krosmaster able to summon a mob, debuff AP (the mop debuffs MP), swap places with other characters and a crafter as well!
Bakara – a new Kitty Rage with a range of 3-7 cells who is not a boss and can be buffed by Henual for example and do three devastating fire attacks with intelligence.
Lilotte – the only lvl 2 healer we have, healing also buffs range and Lilotte herself is quite fast due to her first spell.
Khan Karkass – is a substitute to Luk Ylook or any other pusher you have. He pushes 2 cells and gives +1 MP. Besides he has earth resistance and 8 HP which is far too much for a lvl 2.
Marline – this seems like a flashback to season 3 – we didn’t find any use to her. So if you have any ideas on using Marline welcome to the comments.
Joris – Swashbuckler – This little guy may be used as a pusher or as a killer of anything he can’t push (unfased are his favourite).

The quality of the figures is much better as there are more intricate and small details on them. The terrain became a little bigger and much nicer. So we are waiting for all this to be implemented.

See ya.

2016 Map Creation Contest

Are you itching to design something? Then why not jump into this contest: create a new competitive map for Krosmaster, and it could become an official game map!

Now's the time to start a new contest! This time, we're calling on burgeoning designers the world over. The task will be hard, but the reward is worth it...

The goal of the competition

This competition will take place from August 22nd to September 22nd (11:59 p.m. CEST). To participate, you must create a new competitive Krosmaster Arena map: a battlefield where Krosmasters will clash, like those used in the tournaments.

It must respect the following rules:

  • The map must be exactly 12 by 12 cells or 13 by 11 cells (like the recent World Championship).
  • The map may use one and only one special rule. It could be a rule that already exists on another map (Piwate Island's rafts, or Fog, for example), or one that you've created yourself.
    • If you invent your own special rule, you must explain it in a short text accompanying your entry. Try to keep the text short but comprehensible. Be aware that the text must be written in English (see below)!
  • Your entry must be provided as a jpeg image no bigger than 800 pixels by 800 pixels.
  • Only one entry per person.

This map is intended to be competitive; as such, it should promote engagement with the enemy and the exchange of blows, rather than passivity or combos that win in a single turn. Combat must be profitable for both players!

How to create this map? You can use the Map Aboum tool (on the Big Bad forum) to create schematic versions of your creations in image form. If you're talented with computers, you can even create the map yourself, but be sure that it remains clear and visible (the beauty of the map won't be a factor in the final jury decision!).

And in all cases, since this contest is international, your entry must be published in English to this address. If your entry is accompanied by text, it must also be in English. Entries in any other language will not be considered. If you need help writing your text, don't hesitate to ask the community for help!

At stake

A single winner will be chosen by our jury when the contest is over. The chosen map will be published, distributed, and used in official Krosmaster tournaments! It must first make it past our Game Designer, who will check its balance, and some minor changes are possible.

Also, the creator of the map will win their choice of prizes: either 3 XL Krosmaster figurines (King of the Gobballs, Queen of the Tofus, Kassius Kaos), or an XL Pink Dragoone!

A few tips

This competition was already proposed in 2014 by the members of the Big Bad forum, and the two winning maps were then published: the Plantation map and the Fog map. If you want to see the candidates that were judged, head here.

If you want to create your own mechanic, keep in mind that it must be something that can be explained and understood quickly. A rule which is too complex or radically changes the rules of the game is likely to negatively affect your entry.

We encourage originality, but above all, we're looking for a map that's balanced and fun to play. An original but unbalanced mechanic will not help a map that would have been balanced using the known rules!

And finally - and this is important - don't hesitate to test your maps with different teams and strategies. Theory is good, but a field test can reveal much more than you imagined!

Good luck and inspiration for all, and may the best win!

I have an army. We have a Merkator.

Greetings Masters of Krosmaster!
This is Warpstone and we’ll look at one of the most popular Krosmasters, one of the top tournament picks and the winner of WC 2016 - Merkator.

After issuing this article in the Russian language here in our public we had a steady decrease of Merkator's tournament potential in our community/ So probably we should have put it here before the Worlds, but it's never too late.

Character background:
Rugerdas Merkator is a cartographer who literally hit rock bottom. He went completely mad during his underwater expedition. A skilled technomage, this old Foggernaut set out on a task of completely charting the ocean’s bottom. This hopeless endeavour is the thing that has driven him mad.

Abilities:
Merkator is a high-level character with 3 MP, 8 AP and a whooping 17 HP.

Why is he trouble?
One of Merkator’s main strengths are his powers: Krobust prevents him from taking more than 3 injuries from a single enemy spell; Water and Air Resistances protect him from many popular ranged attacks (think Quentin Flush’s Lottery or Bill Tell’s arrows). His Button Snap spell will double his damage for a turn while buffing his AP and MP for the next turn, effectively giving him enough power to seriously punish his enemies and finish the survivors later. Aside from that, a huge number of Demonic Rewards will turn him into a perfect killing machine for a turn, be it Air/Water damage or AP/MP buffs.

Team comps:
Most popular pieces to complement Merkator are Kanniball Jav or Srammy  who help his positioning by pushing him into the mid-field, as well as Lou (the level 2 Ouginak) who can buff his AP/MP with minimal risk of damaging him in the process (due to his Water Resistance). The rest of the team is usually filled with low-level utility Krosmasters collecting Kamas, providing Initiative (Coa Gulary), control (Moe Lawr, Mike Locke, Fern Sock’em, Phaeris - Devastated), healing (Di Curey, Steamy Wonder) or more damage (Quentin Flush).
Thus, a typical Merkator Push team consists of the Merk himself, pushers and Kama collectors, as well as utility characters.

How to counter Merkator?
Maneuver:
A good tactic would be to keep one’s distance from Merkator. He’s got the worst mobility/range combination among the level 6’s and finds it hard to bypass or avoid blocking terrain. Use summoned mobs or mechanisms to your advantage!
MP-reducing bombs and attacks would be the most efficient; using summons to block his way will also prevent Jav or Srammy from pushing him toward your team. Among popular MP reducers are Ghett Outtadier, Diver Birel, Boo Ming and Elogio. Moe Lawr, Doo Rex and Vampyro could reduce his spell range. Unorthodox choices include Grampy, who can, with some luck, both push Merkator away and reduce his MP; Black Crow’s summoned Krobaks both block his way and disrupt his positioning with their Attracts 1 attacks. In addition, Black Crow’s Laugh will devastate a Merkator Push’s first turn, preventing Jav’ third or Srammy’s second push.
Another way would be to use Malee Buhrum or Kriss Krass to rid Merkator of his Resistances and Krobust, thus allowing to do more damage.
Attack:
DR’s that increase your spells’ base damage might be less important than survivability or maneuverability DR’s due to Krobust negating all damage from a single spell above 3. Therefore, characters with multiple attacks start to shine against Merk. Both Flame Knight and Yugo can perform series of attacks that are not affected by Merkator’s Resistances. Yet another good team comp would include a number of level 1’s to launch multiple spells at Merkator. Even if a turn of attacks from these characters doesn’t kill Merkator, the massive damage will make the Merk player think twice about using Button Snap.

Don’t play his games:
A typical Merkator team shines when equipped with proper DR’s and is therefore heavily Kama-dependent. Merk will strive to stockpile DR’s that allow him to kill one of your Krosmasters each turn, so his low-level allies will run around the map collecting coins. First, it is a good idea to target characters who are far away from Merk. Second, you can buy the DR’s Merk wants, such as Air/Water damage buffs and Xelor Style, even if you don’t really need them. Yet another good tactic is to try ignoring Merk altogether and focus on his weaker allies who are cumulatively worth the same 6 GG’s.

Demonic Rewards:
Several DR’s turn Merk into an unstoppable force on the arena, so it is a good idea to deny them to a Merk player (bold letters indicate the most powerful):
Granite: Ghetto Rade, Aero Buff, Aero Boost, Aqua Buff, Aqua Boost
Jade: Xelor Style, Cra Style, Enutrof Style, Iop Style, Sram Style, Sacrier Style
Gold: Stasis Crystal, Crow Set, Vulbis Dofus, Cawwot Dofus, Ice Dofus, Wakfu Spout, Lil’Wabbit

There are a few that will help fight against Merk by providing a tactical advantage:
Glue, Confuse, Osamodas Style, Sadida Style, Feca Style, Recall Potion.

Below is a typical Merkator Push starting position on Pit Arena. Red borders indicate Steamtrooper damage range if Merkator isn’t blocked.
